A Cleaner Environment: Living in a Plastic World

A Cleaner Environment

We all probably know the scoop on plastics right? Yet July 8, 2015 showed just one more insidious side to the underworld of plastics.  This study in particular is a tug on my heartstrings.  Not only are very popular plastics full of BPAs (Endocrine disrupters), now they claim to also be the cause of high blood pressure in children.  This correlates significantly with the predictions of the male Millennials having heart attacks in their 20’s.  It’s also been proven to accelerate heart disease in sedentary folks.  It’s looking like the majority of mainstream America is a target on many fronts however, I believe this to be a critical link in our collective health care that we can personally control first and foremost. Why bother eating right and exercising if the containers of our food are sabotaging our hard work?

Our family has stopped using the dishwasher for any plastics except on rare occasion. I recycle scratched wares and don’t even think about re-using plastic containers meant for one use only (ie water bottles, yogurt containers, …) and have eliminated plastic wrap.  (I couldn’t tear a straight sheet half the time anyway!)  Check out my blog post about ‘Clean Safe Plastics proving Toxic’ for more details.

A Plastic World

“Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break. They are often called plasticizers. Some phthalates are used as solvents (dissolving agents) for other materials. They are used in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, adhesives, detergents, lubricating oils, automotive plastics, plastic clothes (raincoats), and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays, and nail polishes).

Phthalates are used widely in polyvinyl chloride plastics, which are used to make products such as plastic packaging film and sheets, garden hoses, inflatable toys, blood-storage containers, medical tubing, and some children’s toys.” [1]

These known chemicals – phylalates are still distributed and commonly used in almost every sector of our lives. From ‘cradle to grave’ our environment is bombarded with plastics – toys, water bottles, kitchen ware, refrigerator, washers, dryers, dishwashers, … Even the ‘paper’ receipts we use are coated with toxic chemicals (especially susceptible after hands are lathered in hand sanitizer).  Think twice.  Act smart.  Share the world.

Don’t forget that recycle symbol when the surface starts to show wear and tear. Don’t throw it out – recycle whenever possible. And if you’re really progressive, you probably avoid the microwave and dishwasher prolonging the active use of plastics while releasing less chemicals into your food supply.

This is a true story from a colleague of mine. Enjoy and pass it on to others. Have a great week!
Jerry is the manager of a restaurant in America. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would always reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”

Many of the waiters at his restaurant quit their jobs when he changed jobs, so they could follow him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was always there, telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, “I don’t get it! No one can be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?”

Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, I have two choices today. I can choose to be in a good mood or I can choose to be in a bad mood. I always choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I always choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I always choose the positive side of life.”

“But it’s not always that easy,” I protested.

“Yes, it is,” Jerry said “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. It’s your choice how you live your life.”

Several years later, I heard that Jerry accidentally did something you are never supposed to do in the restaurant business: left the back door of his restaurant open one morning and was robbed by three armed men. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found quickly and rushed to the hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “If I were any better, I’d be twins. Want to see my scars?”

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “Then, after they shot me, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or choose to die. I chose to live.”

“Weren’t you scared?” I asked.

Jerry continued, “The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the Emergency Room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.”

“What did you do?” I asked.

“Well, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me,” said Jerry. “She asked if I was allergic to anything.” ‘Yes,’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Bullets!’ Over their laughter, I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Please operate on me as if I am alive, not dead’.”

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude.
I learned from him that every day you have the choice to either enjoy your life or to hate it. The only thing that is truly yours that no one can control or take from you is your attitude, so if you can take care of that, everything else in life becomes much easier.

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is mystery.
Today is a gift.
That’s why they call it the ‘present’.

The Burnout Protocol

Burnout protocol freebie

There is still time for lots of healing potential. After consulting with your doctor and health coach, consider the Burnout Protocol if you’re feeling burnt, fatigued, mentally fuzzy or lots of generalized pain. For example, counterintuitive as it may sound, shoulder surgery clients will need to be released from PT to practice these moves. Even building the upper body too soon or too late can create complications. Upper body strength is needed in men and women to stabilize those ligaments and tendons supporting the entire shoulder area, including the neck. Body weight is a great form of strength training in the beginning stages – weights only as allowed per your therapist &/or Dr. If you’re at the stage of complete breakdown and cannot get out of bed, consider seeing an Integrative Doctor that understands your body like you do. I often work alongside Dr’s in these settings to help maintain progress. There is hope! Let’s get started…

Adrenals, Cortisol, Thyroid, oh my!

This is where yoga comes in as our special presentation. In fact, chanting/singing (certain sound waves – NAAM – are very healing to our bodies when practiced in particular ways that are fun and easy). While full breathing is optimal to the adrenal’s healing, bringing a seance of intention with every breath magnify so many benefits in a synchronistic manner. It’s simple – to loosen and warm up the body, try some cardio first to warm up – 5-10 minutes is adequate. Although dancing really is thought of as a social event, I enjoy turning on a playlist and dancing in the living room. (‘Happy’ from Pherrel is definitely on that list). Enjoy this because this what I like to call our childlike dolphin energy come into play. Have fun with this! Laughing is good for the soul and fights adrenal fatigue quickly. Try to get at least 10 min at a comfortable feel-good pace never over exerting. You can build up gradually to 30 minutes a day at 10 minute intervals. Strong research shows this to be as effective as 30 minutes in one shot. Practice 5 days minimum while listening to your body carefully.

Now on a mat (or even in bed still) lie in mountain relaxation pose (lie down with body in alignment yet relaxed – feet are ~6″ apart) to chill. Breathing deeply for a minute or two with eyes closed and focused between the brows. Listen to your mind/body – does it point out pain? Ask why and listen. Your body is your best barometer of your health – don’t delegate it to others without a full recon on your own.

Now exhale and bring arms up while bringing the right knee to the chest, holding with both arms on an exhale. While breathing evenly, bend knee to left with left hand (keeping hips down and in alignment). Reverse sides slowly. Still warming body up here. 🙂

Next on all fours, the cat/dog stretches the spine very slowly while breathing consciously. If feeling strong and there are no contra-indications, pick up the speed of alternating stretches while breathing strongly and a comfortable cadence as stamina allows. Be kind to yourself and respect your mind/body- each day will be a bit different. Enjoy the rhythmic movement and alternate with rotating shoulders and hips to finish this step.

Now this may be a challenge for some, but moving into down dog, (knees slightly bent and core strong) place your pituitary gland (ears) between your elbows and elongate the spine while stretching the hamstrings. Keep fingers and toes spread wide. Breathe. Eye position continues on the brow line between the eyes.

Almost there! Come up to standing mountain – feet shoulder width apart and arms up – stretching (breathe) to left, then to right slowly. Repeat to count of 4.

In standing mountain pose, now to unwind breathing fully in and out, relaxing your shoulders, bring oxygen into your lower belly for a count of 4 and exhale deflating your lungs fully for even longer and repeat this 3x to center and focus. Now

This simple but effective protocol can be done first thing in bed before getting up or after meditation/prayer. Think strong and lithe as a tiger/tigress while maintaining the swagger of the fun loving dolphin. This posture is very attractive and vibrates on a high level attracting our energy and thoughts bringing abundance and opening doors where there were only closed windows.

The art of NAAM and the energy of the Lion will be discussed in our next level of instruction. It is the second practice of three in the Beginner’s Burnout Protocol. As are most physical/mental/spiritual issues, change didn’t happen overnight. Neither will the ‘cure’ yet with discipline and some fun everyday, a bit will be chipped away here and there as needed replaced with self-control, vibrancy, healing and hope.

Our last free session we will discuss which foods are best to boost energy levels, accelerate learning processes and keep that edge at work, let alone getting frisky with your honey! I look forward to hearing from you all – feedback is most appreciated.

May many blessings fall down upon as you practice with good intentions.

Namaste. SatNam. Amen.

Throwback Thursday #TBT

When did all this start? How far can we go? What’s the purpose of #TBT anyway? Urban Dict defines it as such: “When you put a picture from a “while” ago on your social media sites
omq Throwback Thursday, I needa find a photo of myself from like hella lonq ago and post it on facebook.”
Webtrends explains: “On Thursdays, anyone can participate in the Throwback Thursday trend by posting content (usually a photo) on social networking sites like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook to remember a past event. Photos can be from years ago or from just a few days ago. There aren’t really any limitations, and even though it can be fun to participate, it really just gives people an excuse to post more.”
Another blog (knowyourmeme) states: Origin
has been associated with things that are deemed classic or vintage since as early as 2003, when it was first defined on Urban Dictionary.[1] The earliest known mention of “Throwback Thursday” can be found in the title of a series of revamped retro cartoon characters that were illustrated by animator Saxton Moore and uploaded onto his blog[2] in January 2006.

So jazzed about juicing! My IIN friends have been uber generous as to their experiences and resource sharing. Let me back up a bit before I share this collective wisdom.
It’s not like I’m new to juicing – I’ve successfully broken 2 already. I started in the 90’s when my first born son was diagnosed with leukemia. (ref1) Without much assistance from anyone at the time (nor the vast World Wide Web), I was on a life-saving mission trekking the globe to find a cure and the cause. (Another post I promise).

In my years since then and in an effort to move on and put the past behind me (& the broken overused juicer), I began juicing again with another machine a friend insisted I have. I made a valiant attempt I think to resurrect any juiciness from scrubbed and washed produce every day until, yes, another one bites the dust.

Yes I missed the many benefits of being juicy and feeling fantastic, but definitely not missing the clean-up. I don’t know about you and everyone’s different, but I enjoy the prep work of cleaning, chopping, slicing and peeling my produce. It’s gritty work, like gardening, that puts me in touch with my food. I light a candle and with much meditative contemplation, I prepare (& pray) along with my new vision of a meal – shooting from the hip and creating as I go.

Yet my choice is now a simple blender – a red Hamilton Beach. A wedding gift probably intended for margaritas rather than mango pineapple juice. Yet it works for me – I love the fact I get every bit of the WHOLE produce rather than just the concentrated version. My family is now on board and asking for those great ‘smoothie’ recipes I used to make them. I’ve given them blenders now as gifts, with juicing recipes rather than a margarita accessories, and it does appear to be working for them.
Perhaps my intentions while working in the kitchen are behind it – or maybe, just maybe, my prayers are being heard after all.

Help others with blood cancers —

Ref1. Try telling the beautiful state of California you choose to use alternative methods to treat the cancer your child was mis-diagnosed by the nice healthcare system for weeks, and you’ll be threatened the loss of your beloved.

Options —
In a world of sometimes too many options, parents with children diagnosed with cancer have none. At least it can feel that way. Trust me I understand – I’ve been there and have helped many like you. Achieve that safety bet you’ve been taught to hold tight for your child and never let go. Your child needs you – you can do this!
Parents, you still have options that will help your child and still stay within protocol.
Until then, look for my next post and spread the light.

Agnostic Growing Up

Millions of people are demanding a palpable, user-friendly approach to modern life in order to keep up. We believe there is a peak in everyday life, an edge – fit, sex appeal, vigor and a sense of vitality. Yet in the moment, perhaps we also need a daily mystical spiritual experience.

We tend to simplify our meditative practices to a 5 minute repetition, a robotic 30 minute cardiovascular routine every day and perhaps even a bit of stretching and strengthening every other day. This is all well and good if you desire a trim and fit physique, indeed a necessary task to stay at peak. Yet is something missing?

Day by day our world demands a deeper consciousness of our experience within and without our world. Having felt a hole from inside, a void, that is insatiable is somewhat disheartening (no pun intended). Yet, is it really satisfied by more closet organization, more awesome technology, more cardio, … you get the picture, and it isn’t pretty.

Perhaps we need a Soul Overhaul by first admitting that our bodies have been in a concentration camp rather than revered as a matter of dancing light.

Light energy that is concentrated to the witness of being totally at one with nature. Realizing that we are not living in an object to escape, but a mystical temple to be revered. The light energy in our body is an embodiment of crystallized light divinized by our Creator to experience a divine radiance. Proposing an embodiment – a gesture of prayer in divine service of compassion to ourselves and others may be the secret fountain of youth.

The Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine are a marriage of this understanding of divine light and matter – prayer and action.

Our work then is not separate from our Father, but is a time for our Sacred Mother to be experienced in all details of inspired Creation. Once we experience our own divinity in nature, our species may end the torture of all nature and enable the Tantra of Tenderness in all Beings.
