What is epigenetics and why should I care? If you suffer from anxiety (depression), then this may be of interest. Sorry it’s so late but my juices are flowing.

Anxiety and Epigenetics

Genetic predisposition can attribute to our anxiety. 

Epigenetics are the study of our ancestors DNA. While only 5% of our reactions or responses affect our actions, they are deep seated emotions (anxiety, depression, …) that are often attributed to past lives that are inescapable. Deepak Chopra’s latest book highlights the effect of our choices in life. 
In 1998 I came to the conclusion after being told by Sylvia Browne that past lives or not, I believe THIS is my Last life. She didn’t believe in the past life theory, nor does Deepak. In fact, they come from 2 different perspectives and now agree on this: Some of our memories are not our own, but the DNA inherited from our ancestors … 7 generations back. 

Stress can also created by finances – good and bad.  Sudden windfalls or loss of a job create the same stress. What differs is our reaction. 

I’ve been known to work difficult and challenging deadlines and pulling them off magically. It’s exciting projects like this that actually can cause the most collateral damage with a family. Similar to Ariana Huffington’s story who nearly worked herself to death, she also learned the value of rest. Who has time for rest? Vacations can be more exhausting than work! In my case, the past 7 yrs, especially the last 5, have been extremely tight – juggling long periods of unemployment between spouses, multiple jobs, going back to school – these can all add stress to relationships, especially within family. Owning my own business gives me job security and time freedom. 
Since the 2008 Recession, life changed drastically for most in the U.S. For us, we rode it out working for a client in Oklahoma City just before it hit our hometown hard. I continued my commute to Big Bear keeping my design business and property management profitable. Coming back two years later, we still had a house but now saw a need to relocate. 
Triggers? Different for everyone! Know thyself. It helps a lot to know your weaknesses in order to be better prepared. Think of all senses. Is Work a trigger? Is it the load (55 hrs/wk) or is it your boss? Maybe the light or smells? 
Anxiety with New Places or People? If it’s an irrational fear, my biggest and best tool was to (finally) say YES! for a measured amount of time and suck it up. For Shonda Rhimes she believes being your own person requires saying yes even when you’re not expected to. For me, I started with one week and watched it expand to a month, a year, and now a lifetime. Liberating! This truly gave me more confidence to do more scary crazy things I would usually avoid. 
Does Time heal all? Well no, not always. Sometimes Father Time needs some help. Enlist Mother Nature by all means, and don’t forget yourself. Only you are truly responsible for every reaction and subsequent life choices. Anxiety can be circumstantial or chronic. Who hasn’t experienced some stress around finances in the past 7 years? It’s been quite a test of character for most of us. Anxiety can cause one to age prematurely causing unwanted dis-ease let alone aesthetic concerns of biting nails and chewing on your lip.  
Treatment Options

Medication vs Meditation 

Do a cost benefit analysis – is a dry mouth worth minimizing 4 panic attacks a day? Or would ‘talk therapy’ help in the time that you could use PRN instead. (Self) Hypnosis and Meditation have been a blessing when changes need to be be made easing the transition in my life. I personally am trained in Hypnosis by my own dear mother, a clinical psychotherapist certified in hypnotherapy, who also used journaling as a personal escape hatch in her stressful field of psychiatry. Although rewarding, her inability to share her own experiences due to her license car restrictions. In fact, much of this book is indeed straight from my own journal. (See Facebook group, Happiness Handbook for the real journal). Spending time in nature is uplifting for many reasons. In fact, even a landscape picture or painting in your work space can aide in deeper breathing.

Mother’s Day In California

Why not have a BBQ this MOTHER’s DAY?  It’s such a beautiful day I immediately jumped at the chance to kayak.  Our weather has been chilly lately and it really feels like Summer.  So time to spend a least rely holiday with the family. And there was no intention to post today,  wanted to share this great marinade That’s evolved in our household.  I’m not a big meat eater, but this will woo any mom. 

Marinade 1# of select meat (we chose top loin). Other options:



Secret Marinade

1T toasted pumpkin oil 

1/4 c Sesame Oil 

1/4 c cooking wine

2T Greek yogurt (optional)

“Secret Seasonings” 

Pink salt and pepper to taste

Whisk together and marinade. 
Pop the corn on the grill and cook until done on top rack 

Meat is grilled to taste. 
Serving Suggestions:

Mixed Herb Salad with tomatoes 
Seasonal | Local produce (we chose corn on the cob)

Sweet cornbread GF

I am so blessed and grateful for this year of The Tower for me, anyway. 2014 has finally come to a successful close. My book is finished and ready for editing, marketing and publication. Being that I am already starting the second in a series, I’d call that a success. (More on that later)

If you’ve ever tried to make a New Year Resolution, you can understand the frustration when it’s sabotaged yet again! Since I gave up Blaming & Excuses, I was stuck with looking at the mirror when I felt a ‘saboteur’ in my midst. Painful but effective. My sense of humor has since kicked in handling the brutal reality of this Truth. Staying active and meditation helped too.

Now what? I’ve accomplished priceless goals that took all year, 4 seasons, to assimilate into my lifestyle for good. As mentioned earlier, I move on to an even loftier goal – sell my book. (I could say that wasn’t my main objective, but the income could go to a good cause – say my child’s education.). Seriously, this has been my usual attempt at a Resolution, but at a higher level of accountability. Scary, but well worth the effort and patience. I have a long way to go still, yet I feel I have made the most difficult step – commitment. (Fellow bloggers, you know what I’m talking about.)

I’m interested, did you resonate with the quote above? Unless you’re under 35 (we love you too!), I have been working with most clients like you, from 35 to 97. The scope of my practice being sports injuries in competitive athletes. Key word here – competitive. That one thing alone is responsible for 75% of my business. Some of us just don’t know when to say when. lol.

Is Society our Extended MindBody?

A) Do you secretly believe that our minds really do ‘project’ our own perspective as a filter over an otherwise unbiased Reality?

 B) Or do you consider other’s thoughts as an individual and unique filter of their own making when considering negotiations, conversations or merely a casual conversation? 

 C) Perhaps it’s neither and you really don’t think about either point of view (POV) at all. Laugh it off, you think, since I don’t believe anyone else knows (or cares) anyhow. After all, it’s how my family has operated for generations.

 Which group do you fall into most of the time? Now depending on your POV, you probably have an entirely different result in conversations, relationships and life in general. I’m not a betting person, but in this case I’d put my money on B as perhaps the most successful in this selection. Not to say A or C aren’t a happy lot – in fact, no doubt they are. Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

Yet if we turn back to B, there is a peculiar stance these folks generally take that is somewhat baffling at times. As in, how do they do that – consistently – and manage a stress-free existence? Well, ask them if it’s true.

 But since you’re here, my theory goes like this:

Our subconscious is being formed from the time of conception through birth and very much in those formative years of our early innocence, just about 4 years old it seems. 

Continuing on in my very unscientific observation, we continue these formative habit-forming years until about 8 when we officially are expected to know the difference between right and wrong. How do we ‘know’ you say? It’s an instinctual predilection just as other mammals, birds so forth realize it’s time to migrate. Maybe it has something to do with that magnet in our heads and the North Pole. Google it – or wait for my book that will go into more detail. (Just don’t tell my Agent). Yet, I’m sure there are plenty of studies to prove otherwise – I am just the messenger – you decide here.

What about all sentient beings? Do they contribute to the world around us while we are busy making a living, do we even notice let alone care? I’d suggest to you, if you haven’t already, make a pact with Nature in 2015 and practice conscious awareness as often as possible and note what happens. I’d love to hear your perspective.

Peace and Love to ALL

I for one have always looked forward to this time of year. Admittedly, not the easiest thing to do nowadays. So, this year I gave myself a Challenge to really be in the moment as a Present to myself. Treating this present moment as a gift is hardly off base, yet in real life impossible deadlines loom, obligatory celebrations beckon, the responsibility of gathering friends and family of course lie in whose lap?

While gifts and presents come in all shapes and sizes, I’m not here to support more materialistic spending. Yet, if spending is necessary, give wisely. Not only will your accountant be impressed, but you will be building a legacy for years to come. Find a true cause in need that you feel passionate about and give anonymously. Then, start giving (time, money, a smile) with the best of intentions and let others see – you will be giving the best gift of the season by your example.

My children (teens) have had it rough the last few years, so they think. Not giving in to the buzz on the media for more gadgets and toys, I decided to get creative. Writing a book just for them (OK, a LONG letter with lots of pictures) a few years back was the greatest gift of myself I could think of. Of course, they were dumbfounded but they were quite polite about it. I did give some unique items they needed that were hand crafted and fair trade. One year, same thing – another novella and an organic hemp ditty bag full of healthy goodies. You get the picture. My personal lesson was to embrace my imperfections as perfect – for me at that time and moment.

I’d love to hear about your stories BELOW to inspire me and others. Needless to say, I’ve been successful in spreading cheer and goodwill from within. As ironic as this sounds, this year more than ever, l practice disciplined self-care (doesn’t that sound like fun) while focusing on Giving to others. Balancing act for sure, but there’s a secret. I call it simply Blessing. (Notice the adjective form here.) It goes a little like this –

Giving is way more fun than Getting.

So what am I saying? Happiness lies in the giving outside of our self. But don’t be fooled, this type of giving is exponential on the rate of return. Priceless ‘gifts’ will come your way at the perfect time when we give selflessly to others in need.
